Why We Built FableKid: Every Child Deserves to Be the Hero of Their Own Story
A founder's note on why personalised AI storytelling for children is one of the most important things we could build — and what FableKid will do differently.
There is a moment every parent knows.
It is 8:47 PM. The child won't sleep. You've read the same book for the fourteenth consecutive night — you can recite it backwards — and somewhere between page three and the part where the bunny finds his hat, you wonder: does this story actually mean anything to my child?
The bunny has no name your child recognises. The town looks nothing like your city. The lesson — share, be kind, be brave — is abstract, floating.
Your child hears a story. What they need is their story.
The Problem with How Children's Stories Work Today
The global children's book industry is worth over $16 billion. And yet, for the vast majority of the world's children, the stories on the shelf were written for someone else.
Written in English first, then translated. Set in seasons your child has never seen. Featuring food, names, and places from a culture that isn't yours.
For an Indian child, a Nigerian child, a Tamil-speaking child in Malaysia — the hero of every story looks, speaks, and lives differently from them. The lesson lands, but the connection doesn't.
Personalised physical storybooks exist — but they cost ₹2,000–₹5,000 per book, take two weeks to arrive, and offer surface-level personalisation: swap the name on the cover, keep everything else the same.
We wanted to go much deeper than that.
The Idea Behind FableKid
The premise is simple: what if your child didn't just read a story — what if your child was the story?
A parent takes two minutes to tell us about their child. Their name. Their age. What they love — dinosaurs, cricket, space, cooking, superheroes. And one life lesson the parent wants woven into the narrative — courage, kindness, honesty, sharing, handling failure.
FableKid does the rest.
In under 60 seconds, it writes a complete, original story where your child is the protagonist — by name, by personality, by the things they actually care about. Not a template with a name swapped in. A genuinely original narrative, written natively in your language.
Then it generates a consistent illustrated character — your child's illustrated avatar — that looks the same on every page. Not generic clip-art. A character that belongs to your book.
The output is a print-quality PDF. You can read it in the built-in storybook reader, listen to it narrated aloud, watch it as a short animated video, send it directly on WhatsApp, or order it printed and shipped as a hardcover gift.
What We Built, and Why It Matters
A few things we refused to compromise on:
Native language, not translation. FableKid writes stories in 12+ languages as a first-class experience — including Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, and more. The story is written in your language, not run through a translation engine. The cadence, the idioms, the cultural references — all native.
Consistent characters across every page. This was the hard technical problem. Generating one good illustration is straightforward. Generating a character that looks the same on page 1 and page 12 — same face, same clothes, same proportions — required significant work. We solved it.
Five art styles. Parents choose from Watercolour, Studio Cartoon, Line Art, Storybook Classic, and Vibrant Pop. Each one creates a completely different visual feel for the same story.
Geo-based pricing. A family in Mumbai and a family in London should both be able to afford a book that stars their child. Our pricing adjusts by region so the product is accessible everywhere, not just in high-income markets.
